Smart Indoor Farming IoT: How We Built It on ESP32, BLE, Grow Lights and AWS
Plants don’t follow a schedule, but your growing technology has to. For growers, greenhouse operators and agritech teams, steady light, water and climate control are what protect yield and quality. Doing it by hand costs time and rarely stays consistent.
What we built
Our team at WeMakeIoT developed the firmware and mobile app for a connected indoor farming system. It automatically controls grow LEDs and irrigation using schedules and live sensor data. Users set everything from their mobile application. The system has three parts:
- Device: Custom ESP32 firmware that runs the lighting and watering logic.
- Mobile app: Connects over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) so users can configure schedules and receive update alerts.
- Cloud: An AWS-based backend that lets the product scale from a few units to a large connected fleet.
Why it matters beyond one indoor garden
The building blocks are the same ones used in larger agricultural systems: sensors, scheduled control, a mobile interface and a cloud platform. That makes this approach useful for:
- Agritech companies and startups turning a growing-tech idea into a real product
- Grow-light and LED manufacturers adding smart scheduling and app control
- Greenhouse and vertical farming businesses automating light and irrigation
- Farming equipment makers adding connectivity to pumps and controllers
- System integrators looking for a reliable firmware and app partner

What to consider before you build
If you are planning a connected growing product, these questions save time and cost early on:
- What must the device do with no internet? Decide which functions, such as light schedules and irrigation, must keep working offline.
- How will users set it up? BLE onboarding through a mobile app keeps the process simple and cuts support requests.
- How will you update it? Plan OTA updates and version alerts before the first unit ships.
- Which sensors really drive your decisions? Choose sensors for the control logic you need, not for the longest feature list.
- Where will the data live? Decide early how device data reaches the cloud and who can see it.
